Inlays & Onlays

Inlays, Onlays and Porcelain Veneers are all dental restorations that cover a part of the tooth’s surface versus covering the entire tooth like a Dental Crown does.

Inlays cover the chewing surface of your tooth and leave the cusps of the tooth untouched. Onlays are very similar, but they cover one of the tooth’s cusps (the raised edge or side of the tooth) as well as the chewing surface. Onlays are often referred to as a partial crown. Inlays and onlays are often made from porcelain and custom made for the patient’s mouth. The customization allows inlays and onlays to fit the shape of the natural tooth and achieves a natural bite.

Inlays and onlays are most frequently used to treat decay that too advanced for a simple filling, but not advanced enough for a dental crown. When placed, an inlay or onlay seals the vulnerable area of the tooth preventing future decay or tooth injury.

As with most dental restorations, inlays and onlays are not permanent and will someday have to be replaced. They are very durable and will last many years, restoring the function, health and appearance of your smile.
