Reasons for Dental Implants:
- Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.
- Restore a patient’s confident smile.
- Restore chewing and speech.
- Restore or enhance facial tissues.
- Support a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are replacements for lost or missing teeth. Once restored, they look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. Dental implants provide a stable attachment for a single tooth, bridge, or complete dentures.
Dental implants have three parts: the implant or fixture, abutment, and prosthesis. The implant is a small screw that goes directly into your jawbone. The abutment is also a screw that sits just above the jawbone as a connection between the implant and the prosthesis. The prosthesis is the artificial tooth that replaces your old or missing tooth. You take care of the prosthesis like you would any tooth.
What does getting dental implants involve?
The process of getting dental implants may require only a few weeks or several months to accomplish.
X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for a dental implant. Often Dr. Sambursky requests that a CT scan be performed to determine whether there is enough bone replacement for a successful dental implant placement, prior to scheduling dental implant surgery.
While the area is numb, the dental implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself onto the bone for up to six months. Occasionally a second stage surgical procedure is required to bring the implant from the bone level, and through the tissue, by using a trans-mucosal abutment.
After several weeks of healing the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the dental implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient. This may take two to three visits.
You will receive care instructions when your dental implant treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the longevity of your new dental implant.
How Do You Benefit From Dental Implants?
Dental implants are great for many reasons. Besides getting your natural smile back, you also can chew, speak, and smile more easily. Dental implants also prevent facial changes and support surrounding teeth.
And if you worry about maintenance, don’t. Dental implants do require dental hygiene as normal teeth do, but they don’t require any extra tasks outside of brushing or flossing. And unlike natural teeth, your dental implant will never get cavities.
As long as you care for your dental implant like you would your normal teeth, you have a high 98% rate of success.
